Kurosaki Ichigo has always had the unique ability to see ghosts, but this ability doesn't interfere with his life nearly as much as it does after an encounter with Kuchiki Rukia, a Shinigami (death god) and member of the mysterious Soul Society. While fighting a Hollow (evil spirits that prey on humans who display psychic energy), Rukia attempts to lend Ichigo some of her powers so that he can save his family from the evil demons, but much to her surprise Ichicho is able to absorb every last drop of her energy. Now a full Shinigami himself Ichigo quickly learns that the seemingly harmless world that he had inhabited is indeed one full of dangerous spirits, and along with Rukia, who is slowly regaining her own powers, it's Ichigo's job to protect the innocent from Hollows and to help the spirits find peace.
